*sorry if this is a repost. My safari hung the last time*

Some strange things happen with the edit buffer sending and receiving (on a mac, ableton live 9):

- vst plugin: Receiving edit buffer does nothing, sending edit buffer does nothing
patch sending works fine
- au plugin: Recieving edit buffer does nothing, sending edit buffer works
- on au when i change presets on the editor, the patches are sent to the nord (wich is unexpected since program change is off) but also the sent patch is received as if it were a different one?

I tried both channel 1 and 16 on the midi settings (channel 1 since that is advised somewhere on the site for ableton live) but no luck. Also tried a different midi interface.

Is there somthing i missed?

The Edit buffer is where are are doing all the parameter changes on the actual synth, even with the Editor. So, when we change a patch in the Editor, the synth receives a sysex message with the Editor data, and sets it's edit buffer to those values (ie. not permanently stored on the synth at any particular patch number). So, when you use the 'Get or Set Edit Buffer' commands in the Editor, all it is doing is sending and receiving the current synth edit buffer, which is going to be the same data that we just sent when selecting patches or changing parameters in the Editor. So, it doesn't really do anything because the data is already the same between the synth edit buffer and the Editor itself. If you open the MIDI Monitor view, you can see the data is being exchanged, there is just no auditory or data difference.

You may ask, well what good is the button functionality? Consider that you were instead at your synth and made changes there and then wanted to capture those changes you made to the synth edit buffer. Typically, the Editor will already be in sync with those parameter changes, but if not, you could connect it, then use the 'Get Edit Buffer' to bring it in to the Editor. Overall, not the most useful feature button, but it is available there.

Now, using the 'Get Patch/Set Patch' is very similar, except here we are addressing the actual stored patches and the Get/Set methods will permanently change the data.

Hope this clarifies those features for you and others.

Leave your MIDI Setup alone. It should look like it does in the User Manual. Keep it on channel 16 in the MIDI Setup for the VST-AU Lead 2 Editor because that is the Global channel on the Lead 2.

Hi Ianrosta,

Thanks for your answer and the explanation. I'll set the midi channel back to 16. I haven't changed anything else since i read your advice about not to do this.

The problem remains. The scenario is this:

I change presets on the nord. The settings are not reflected in the editor (i would not expect it to be, since the nord does not automatically send the edit buffer when changing presets i presume). When i change some knobs these are reflected in the editor, so to keep all knobs in sync, i would like to send the edit buffer to the editor.
But the editor does not seem to recieve the other settings when i click the "get edit buffer from synth' button.

The scenarion for patch receiving is this (i found it's the same on both au and vst version):
I select an empty slot in the editor.
I change presets on the nord
Click :"Get Patch from Synth"
I see the knobs in the editor change and the preset changes to "Syx Rcv Patch 1", but It's not the patch from I sent from the nord. These settings are then sent to the Nord and i hear a different sound!

The difference between au and vst is that the au version sends the patch (edit buffer?) when changing presets on the editor, but the vst version does not.

Oh and i tried patch sending to the Nord to the vst but that also shows nothing.

So to summarize my questions are:
- Should the Nord send its edit buffer to the editor on changing presets on the Nord? (i assume not)
- Should the Editor send its edit buffer to the Nord on changing presets in the editor? (it seems to do so, but not in the vst version)
- Is there a setting i might have missed why i cannot receive the edit buffer
- What info does the editor version receive when i click "get patch from synth" and why is it different from the patch in the Nord

PS all is done with layer A selected on both the Nord and the Editor and set to channel 1

No.

Yes. Check to make sure your DAW isn't using that MIDI Port used in the Editor MIDI Setup. See the Editor User Manual for more info.

See response #2 above.
- What info does the editor version receive when i click "get patch from synth" and why is it different from the patch in the Nord
It receives the patch from the Lead 2 that is at that program number (the number selected in the Editor).

Again, please make sure you are familiar with the User Manual and the Setup Guide found under the Support section of the web site.
